You may benefit:
1) If you are experiencing intense, uncomfortable emotions. 2) If you cannot relax or you feel tense, anxious, or worried a lot of the time. 3) If you are engaging in behaviors that are problematic or unhealthy . 4) If you’re not able to talk to family or friends about what you are going through.
Is it normal to be depressed or anxious when you have cancer?
Yes….and no.
Feelings of sadness, fear, and nervousness are very normal. However, if these feelings are present most of the time or if they prevent you from doing things that are important to you, then you should get help.
Does Dr. Nyman prescribe medications?
No.
Dr. Nyman is a licensed psychologist who uses talk therapy to help patients adjust and cope with their situation.
Are medications necessary to treat depression, anxiety, or other problems?
No.
Often medications are helpful, but they are usually not necessary. If Dr. Nyman and you decide that you would like to try one, he will work closely with your oncologist to prescribe it and to monitor its effectiveness.
Can I see Dr. Nyman if I am taking medications for anxiety or depression?
Yes.
Dr. Nyman is knowledgeable about these medications and their effects, and he will provide a service that works alongside medication. Often the combination of medications and talk therapy are the best approach.
Will my insurance cover the costs of seeing a health psychologist?
If you have questions about whether your insurance will pay for you to see Dr. Nyman, our billing office will contact your insurance company for you. If you have Medicaid or are uninsured, please contact our billing department to discuss these special circumstances.
